MAYSIE and JORDANBAD REP Bad Rep Series #1 Author: A Meredith Walters Genre/s: Contemporary Romance, New Adult RATING Characters: 4/5 Story: 4/5 Writing Style: 3/5 Overall: 4/5 One of the topics I won’t get tired of is the Greek system of universities - Sorority + Fraternities = Drama. I have read a couple of books with the same sub-topic, and still, it never bores me. Maybe because the writers were good in writing stories about it. Haha! I want to be part of a Sorority and go to the soro-frat parties during my Uni-life, but I’m still thankful I am able to experience it somehow through books. “I wanted to tell you that I couldn't stop thinking about your face. That you had burrowed your way so deep into my veins that I would fucking bleed you. That if I died tomorrow, I could go a happy man for having felt your lips on my skin.” DISCUSSION : The story was narrated in Maysie’s point of view. She’s a typical college girl who just recently been part of the Chi Delta sorority and currently living with her best friend, Riley. Due to her excessive credit card bill, her parents were furious about her irresponsibility and asked her to pay for it instead. To be able to pay her bill, she needed to apply for a second job, fortunately Riley was about to go to Barton’s to apply as a part-time server so she went there too. Then Eli was introduced in the story, he was the no-strings attached ‘boyfriend’ of Maysie, from the way she describes him it was just a sexual relationship and nothing more. During their application and interview at Barton’s, Maysie meets Jordan, who works as a part-time bartender at the bar; from the first time their eyes met they already have this sexual tension between them. At first, Maysie ignored Jordan, but then it became hard for her not to notice and respond to Jordan’s advances towards her. Until, she learned that Jordan was the longtime boyfriend of Chi Delta Sorority president, Olivia and Jordan is the president of the Pi Sig Fraternity and the drummer of Generation Rejects. Afterwards, she broke up with Eli and decided not to think about Jordan anymore. WARNING SPOILER!!! “Then you need to fight for him. Don't give up on something like that. It doesn't come along very often. And when you find it, you hold on tight. You lock that shit down with an iron fist and you never, ever let go. Even when life tries to take it from you, you smack life upside its head like a little bitch and you keep on fighting for it.” I love how Meredith established Maysie’s effort ignore Jordan and Jordan’s efforts to get closer to Maysie. It was a challenge of push and pull towards their feeling. I can imagine how Maysie tried not to be affected with Jordan when she heard him sing for the first time in the bar. After their kiss, Maysie was avoiding Jordan but he was so persistent. Things got more complicated when Olivia got back in town from the summer break, Olivia was naturally a nice person and she was kind to Maysie, who was one of the party-event “Rush” chairperson in their sorority. The Maysie was so guilty in going behind her back, but she knew that turning down the proposals of Jordan for them to be together (even though he was still officially with Olivia) was the right thing. Wouldn’t it be better if Jordan broke up with Olivia? I think if he knew better then he could have saved some drama and complications, but then, that’s what made the story, well, interesting. “I thought you were worth everything. That we were worth all the drama and bullshit. I am willing to fight to the death for what we have. But I can only do that if you're willing to fight with me.” There were few moments were Jordan needed to prioritize Olivia, because she was his girlfriend even though he was caught in a moment with Maysie. They still talk a lot and they were able to open and bare their lives with each other – they were honest of the scars of their past. It went down during the night of a rush party in the Pi Sig Frat house, they were caught in a make-out session in the bathroom by Milla, the sidekick and best friend of Olivia. The news spread like an epidemic, everyone in the party knew about it, minutes after. Maysie got out of the party with the help of Gracie and Vivian, her closest friends in the sorority. This is where the “Bad Rep” comes in the story, Maysie’s bad reputation spread throughout the school and everyone was calling her whore, slut etc. Though Jordan came to his senses to break-up and fight for Maysie. They got together, but Maysie kept running away from Jordan because of some instances, it ended up badly and they broke up. Their time apart got the worse of each other, but it worked for the best. They both faced their individual issues and the ending was something to look forward to. I like the confrontation scene and I like the epilogue. It reflects so much how they’ve grown as individuals from the first page of the story. “You have taken my heart, every inch of me Maysie. I don't know that I have anything else to give you that you don't have already Meredith made you feel like you were part of their roller-coaster relationship, with just a few pages of the book; she made your journey to their ups and downs of becoming mature individuals. What I like most in this book is the push and pull relationship, it wasn’t short but it was not dragging either. It was enough to make them realize or work things out. I first thought it was just one book, but immediately after I finished Bad Rep, I researched and discovered that there were two more books and another one to be published this year! xoxo, M
